Whether youāre new to our turtle-loving community or have been with us since the early days, thereās one shellebrity you absolutely must meetāBunkle, the King of the Sanctuary!

It all started 35 years ago with a call about a wandering Eastern Box Turtle (Terrapene carolina carolina). Little did we know, this curious and fearless explorer would become the undeniable ruler of our hearts. From the moment he arrived, Bunkle took charge with a personality as bold as his beautifully patterned shell.
As one of the most iconic land-dwelling turtles in North America, the Eastern Box Turtle is a symbol of resilience and strength. These remarkable creatures can live for over 100 years, slowly and patiently navigating the world around them. Their hinged shells allow them to completely close up shop when danger strikesāa survival trick Bunkle has mastered over the years!
Now that Bunkle has emerged from his winter hibernation (the coldest one yet!), heās stretching his legs and ready to celebrate our biggest World Turtle DayĀ® ever. This yearās theme, āDancing Turtles Rock,āĀ couldnāt be more perfect for this lively legend.

Ā Eastern Box Turtles have incredible homing instincts. If moved from their home range, theyāll often try to find their way backāeven traveling miles to do it! Thatās why itās so important to protect their natural habitats and avoid relocating them unnecessarily.
